Mandarin is the largest group of Sinitic languages, spoken natively across northern and south-western China. Its standard form, based on the Beijing pronunciation, is called Putonghua in mainland China, Guoyu in Taiwan and Huayu in Singapore and Malaysia. These standards are mutually intelligible but differ in accent, some vocabulary and certain everyday expressions.

Mandarin is a different spoken language from Cantonese, Wu (including Shanghainese), Min (including Hokkien and Taiwanese) and Hakka, even though all are described as Chinese and share a writing system. Many people in China speak a regional language at home and Mandarin at school and work, so a client's comfort in Mandarin can depend on age and background.

How we help

Chinese (Mandarin) services

SILA Linguists®

Mandarin Chinese interpreting and translation services with SILA Linguists®

Mandarin is the language of trade delegations, university campuses, international conferences and many police and court cases, and SILA Linguists® supplies Mandarin interpreters and Chinese translators for all of them across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Putonghua in mainland China, Guoyu in Taiwan and Huayu in Singapore and Malaysia are mutually intelligible standards, but accent and vocabulary differ. A client described simply as speaking Chinese may in fact need Cantonese, Wu or Hakka, so we check first.

Mandarin interpreting, from boardroom to courtroom

Our Mandarin interpreters are experienced in conference interpreting, simultaneous interpreting in booths and remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) for hybrid events and webinars. For negotiations, factory audits, site visits and investor meetings, our consecutive and escort interpreters travel with your team. Legal and public service work covers police interviews, courts, immigration appointments and hospital care, delivered face to face, by telephone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, or by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform.

Interpreters from mainland China and Taiwan use different terms in technology, food and administration, and matching backgrounds helps in sensitive settings and is essential in some negotiations. Chinese names are written family name first, so our interpreters help staff record them correctly. Many people in China speak a regional language at home, and a client's comfort in Mandarin can depend on age and background; we take that into account.

Chinese translation in Simplified and Traditional characters

We translate into Simplified characters for mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia and into Traditional characters for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, adapting vocabulary and punctuation rather than relying on automatic conversion. Layouts are checked so that Simplified and Traditional glyphs are never mixed, and vertical text is set correctly where a formal document requires it.

Typical documents include notarial certificates (公证书), hukou household registration records, academic transcripts, degree certificates, contracts, patents, financial reports and product manuals. Certified Chinese translation follows the pinyin or Wade-Giles spelling of names as shown in the passport and carries a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. We also localise websites, apps, software and e-commerce content, and offer AI-assisted translation with human post-editing for high-volume material.

Mandarin transcription and subtitling

Interview recordings, evidential audio, market research and corporate video can be transcribed in Mandarin with time stamps, translated into English and subtitled for publication or training.

Mandarin expertise by sector

Our vetted, trained and qualified Mandarin linguists can support universities and student services, law firms, courts and police, the NHS, manufacturers, engineering and energy companies, technology firms, financial institutions and event organisers. One project team at SILA Linguists® coordinates interpreters, translators and localisation specialists, every linguist is vetted and signs a confidentiality agreement, and data is handled under UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Chinese (Mandarin)

Interpreting

  • Check which spoken language the client uses. A person described simply as speaking Chinese may need Mandarin, Cantonese or another variety. For mainland Chinese clients, Mandarin is usually right; for Hong Kong clients, Cantonese often is.
  • Interpreters from mainland China and Taiwan use slightly different terms in areas such as technology, food and administration. Matching the interpreter's background to the client's is helpful in sensitive settings and essential for some business negotiations.
  • Chinese personal names are written family name first. Interpreters can help staff record names correctly in English-language systems.
  • Mandarin is widely needed for conference and remote simultaneous interpreting, as well as for legal, medical and business work by video, telephone or in person.

Translation

  • Written Chinese uses one of two character sets. Simplified characters, introduced in the twentieth century, are used in mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia. Traditional characters are used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. The two are mostly convertible, but a good translation also adapts vocabulary and punctuation to the readership, so a simple automatic conversion is not enough.
  • Chinese is normally written left to right in horizontal text today, though Traditional texts and some formal documents are still set vertically. Fonts must support the relevant character set; mixing Simplified and Traditional glyphs is a common layout error.
  • We translate Chinese notarial certificates (公证书), household registration (hukou) records, academic transcripts and degree certificates, and contracts. For certified translations, we follow the pinyin or Wade-Giles spelling of names as shown on the person's passport.
