Armenian interpreting and translation

Armenian forms its own branch of the Indo-European family and has two standard forms, Eastern and Western Armenian. We match interpreters and translators to the standard your client or audience uses.

Armenian is the official language of the Republic of Armenia and is spoken by communities in Georgia, Iran, Russia, the Middle East, Europe and North America. It is an independent branch of the Indo-European family, with a literary history stretching back to the fifth century, when the Armenian alphabet was created.

There are two modern standards. Eastern Armenian is the language of Armenia and of Armenian communities in Iran and the former Soviet Union. Western Armenian developed among Armenians of the Ottoman Empire and is now used mainly in the diaspora, for example in Lebanon, Syria, France and the United States. The two standards share a grammar core but differ in pronunciation, some vocabulary and some grammatical forms, and speakers notice the difference at once.

How we help

Armenian services

SILA Linguists®

Armenian interpreting and translation services by SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® arranges Armenian interpreters and Armenian translators for clients in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Armenian has two modern standards, and speakers notice the difference immediately: Eastern Armenian is the language of Yerevan and of Armenians from Iran and the former Soviet Union, while Western Armenian lives on in Beirut, Aleppo, Marseille and Los Angeles. Tell us where the person or their family comes from and we will match the standard, the accent and the everyday vocabulary they actually use.

Interpreting in Eastern and Western Armenian

Our Armenian interpreting services include face-to-face interpreting at visa and immigration appointments, solicitors' offices, county and family courts, hospitals and GP practices, and university admissions meetings. Telephone interpreting is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting can be set up through the SILA Linguists® app or the client's own platform, which helps when the ideal Western Armenian speaker lives in another country.

For business negotiations, cultural events and conferences we provide consecutive and simultaneous Armenian interpreters, and remote simultaneous interpreting for online events. Many Armenians from the former Soviet states also speak Russian, but we never assume Russian will do; the client decides. Names, dates and numbers are where mismatched standards cause errors, so in legal and mental health settings we always match the standard.

Armenian translation and certified translation

Armenian is written in its own 38-letter alphabet, and the two standards spell differently: Armenia uses the reformed orthography, while most Western Armenian and much Iranian Armenian writing keeps the classical spelling. Our translators follow whichever convention your readers expect and keep personal names consistent with passports and earlier records.

We translate birth, marriage and divorce certificates, court papers, academic diplomas, medical reports, company documents and commercial correspondence in both directions. A certified Armenian translation from us includes a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by employers and professional bodies. We can also prepare Armenian marketing and website content for diaspora audiences. For North American authorities we arrange the right certification, a US certificate of accuracy or a Canadian provincially certified translation.

Armenian transcription

We transcribe Armenian audio and video, from interviews and recorded hearings to oral history projects within diaspora communities, delivering time-stamped transcripts and an English translation. Our transcribers note when a speaker moves between Armenian and Russian, French or Arabic, so the record reflects exactly what was said.

Where we can help in Armenian

Our vetted, trained and qualified Armenian linguists can support immigration advisers, solicitors and courts, NHS and private healthcare providers, universities checking qualifications, and companies trading with Armenia and the Caucasus. With SILA Linguists® you have one point of contact for interpreting, translation and transcription, and every assignment is covered by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. Armenian interpreting is also available to courts, immigration attorneys, hospitals and businesses in the United States and Canada, in Eastern or Western Armenian.

Good to know

Working with Armenian

Interpreting

  • Tell us whether the person speaks Eastern or Western Armenian, or simply where they or their family come from. A speaker from Yerevan and a speaker from Beirut can understand each other, but in legal, medical and mental health settings a matching interpreter reduces misunderstandings, especially with names, numbers and idioms.
  • Many Armenians from Armenia and other former Soviet states also speak Russian. Russian is not a substitute unless the client confirms they are fully comfortable using it.
  • Armenian interpreting is available face to face, by video and by telephone.

Translation

  • Armenian uses its own alphabet of 38 letters, written left to right. Make sure fonts and systems support the Armenian Unicode block before typesetting.
  • Eastern and Western Armenian also differ in spelling. Armenia uses the reformed orthography introduced in the Soviet period, while most Western Armenian and much Iranian Armenian writing keeps the classical orthography. We follow the convention expected by the reader.
  • We translate civil status documents, court papers, academic certificates and medical records, with certified translations accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies. If your documents are for use in the United States or Canada, we arrange the certification required there. For US immigration authorities that is a translator's certificate of accuracy; in Canada it is a translator certified by a provincial association.
