Hungarian, known to its speakers as magyar, is the official language of Hungary and an official EU language. Significant Hungarian-speaking communities live in Romania, especially Transylvania, as well as in Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. Hungarian is a Uralic language; its closest relatives are Khanty and Mansi in western Siberia, and it is only distantly related to Finnish and Estonian.

Hungarian adds suffixes to words to express meanings that English expresses with prepositions, giving it a large number of cases. It uses vowel harmony and has no grammatical gender; the pronoun ő means both he and she. Regional speech in Transylvania or Vojvodina includes local vocabulary and loanwords from Romanian or Serbian.

Hungarian is written in the Latin alphabet with accented vowels including ő and ű, which use a double acute accent. The historical Old Hungarian script (rovás) is used today for decorative and heritage purposes.

How we help

Hungarian services

SILA Linguists®

Hungarian (magyar) interpreting and translation from SILA Linguists®

Hungarian, magyar, is the official language of Hungary and an official EU language, spoken too by large communities in Romania, especially Transylvania, and in Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. It is a Uralic language whose closest relatives, Khanty and Mansi, are in western Siberia. SILA Linguists® provides Hungarian interpreters, translators and transcribers to healthcare and social care, employers in logistics and manufacturing, courts and police, universities and qualification assessors, businesses, and family and child welfare services across the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Hungarian interpreting with the right level of address

Hungarian has several forms of address: te for familiar use, and ön or maga in formal situations, where maga can sound abrupt in some contexts. Our interpreters choose the appropriate level. Because ő is gender-neutral, they clarify who is meant whenever it matters, for instance in a police statement or a child welfare assessment. Hungarian speakers from Romania, Slovakia or Serbia may hold those countries' citizenship and documents, so tell us where the client lives and we will match regional vocabulary.

We provide Hungarian interpreting for GP and hospital appointments, social care assessments, family courts and child welfare meetings, police interviews and criminal courts, and workplace inductions in logistics and manufacturing. You can choose face-to-face attendance, telephone interpreting at any hour, or video through our SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Business meetings and conferences can have consecutive, simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting.

Hungarian translation: family name first

Hungarian puts the family name before the given name, as in Nagy János, while passports and English documents often reverse it, so our translators follow the identity documents and make the family name clear. Fonts must support ő and ű, which are often wrongly replaced by õ or û. Certified translations of birth and marriage certificates, school and university records, court documents and employment papers carry a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by the Home Office, colleges and other UK authorities. In Hungary, certified translations for official use are generally produced by the national translation office, OFFI, so check what a Hungarian authority requires.

For businesses and property investors, we translate contracts, technical documentation, HR material and marketing, and localise websites and software for Hungarian users.

Hungarian transcription and subtitling

Police interviews, recorded calls, family evidence and research recordings in Hungarian are transcribed with timings marked and translated into English, and we subtitle training videos and media.

Good to know

Working with Hungarian

Interpreting

  • Hungarian has several forms of address: te for familiar use, and ön or maga in formal situations, where maga can sound abrupt in some contexts. Interpreters choose the appropriate level. Because ő is gender-neutral, interpreters clarify who is meant where it matters.
  • Hungarian speakers from Romania, Slovakia or Serbia may hold those countries' citizenship and documents. Tell us where the client lives so we can match regional vocabulary and understand the documents involved. Telephone, video and face-to-face interpreting are all available.

Translation

  • Hungarian puts the family name before the given name (Nagy János), while passports and English documents often reverse the order. Translators follow the order shown in the identity documents and make the family name clear. Fonts must support ő and ű; a common error is replacing them with õ or û.
  • In Hungary, certified translations for official use are generally produced by the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation (OFFI), with some exceptions for notaries and specialist translators. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies; documents for Hungarian authorities may need a translation certified in Hungary. These rules can change, so check the current position with the receiving authority.
  • Hungarian text can be noticeably longer than English and uses long compound words, so check layouts, user interfaces and subtitles after translation. Dates are written year first (év, hónap, nap), and translators adapt formats to the target audience.
