Russian is the official language of Russia and an official language of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. It is also used, to different degrees, across Central Asia and the Caucasus, and by many people in Ukraine, Moldova and the Baltic states, where language choice can be sensitive. There are large Russian-speaking communities in Israel, Germany, the United States and the UK. Russian is also an official language of the United Nations and several other international organisations.

Standard Russian, based on the speech of Moscow, is relatively uniform across a very large area, though regional accents and vocabulary exist. Russian used in other countries, such as Kazakhstan or Ukraine, may include local vocabulary.

Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, which has 33 letters. It has six cases and three genders, and verbs distinguish completed and ongoing actions.

SILA Linguists®

Russian interpreters and Russian translation services from SILA Linguists®

Russian is the official language of Russia and an official language of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, used to varying degrees across Central Asia, the Caucasus, Ukraine, Moldova and the Baltic states, and spoken by large communities in Israel, Germany, the United States and the UK. It is also an official language of the United Nations. SILA Linguists® provides Russian interpreters, translators and transcribers for immigration and nationality casework, courts and police, healthcare and mental health, energy and engineering, finance and compliance, and universities worldwide.

Russian interpreting, with language choice handled sensitively

Many people who speak Russian have another first language, such as Ukrainian, Kazakh, Uzbek, Georgian, Armenian or a language of the North Caucasus. Russian works well for many, but in asylum interviews or mental health assessments, a first language may give a fuller account, and language choice can be personal or emotionally charged. We ask the client rather than assume, and we can provide the alternative.

Russian uses formal вы and familiar ты, and our interpreters keep the speaker's register. We cover immigration and nationality interviews, police interviews, courts and solicitors, hospitals and mental health services, face to face, by telephone at any hour of the day or night, and by video through the SILA Linguists® app or whatever conferencing tool you prefer. For energy, mining and engineering companies, financial institutions and universities we provide consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreting for negotiations, audits, arbitration and conferences.

Russian translation: patronymics, transliteration and certification

Russian documents usually include a patronymic, and surnames change for gender, as in Ivanov and Ivanova. Transliteration into Latin script has changed over time and differs by country, so the same name may be spelled differently across documents; we match the passport. Certified translations of birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, court judgments, corporate and financial records carry a signed and dated statement of accuracy, accepted by admissions offices, the Home Office, the courts and other UK authorities. Russian documents for US immigration come with a signed certificate of accuracy. Documents from Russia and other countries in the region may need an apostille or legalisation, which we can advise on from the English side.

For finance, legal and compliance teams, we translate contracts, due diligence files, sanctions-related documentation and regulatory correspondence, and for energy and engineering, technical specifications and HSE material.

Russian transcription and subtitling

Recorded interviews, intercepted calls, voice notes and media in Russian are transcribed with time codes and translated into English, with any switches into other languages marked. We subtitle documentaries, training and corporate video.

Sectors we support in Russian

Our vetted, trained and qualified Russian linguists can support immigration, asylum and nationality practitioners, courts, police and solicitors, healthcare and mental health services, energy, mining and engineering, finance, legal and compliance teams, and universities. SILA Linguists® offers one coordinator and sector-specialist Russian linguists. Every file is handled under NDAs and UK GDPR. Russian interpreters can assist US courts, immigration attorneys, hospitals and businesses as well as UK services.

Good to know

Working with Russian

Interpreting

  • Many people who speak Russian have another first language, such as Ukrainian, Kazakh, Uzbek, Georgian, Armenian or a language of the North Caucasus. For many, Russian works well, but in sensitive conversations, such as asylum interviews or mental health assessments, a person's first language may give a fuller and more accurate account. Language choice can also be personal or emotionally charged, so ask the client rather than assuming.
  • Russian uses formal вы and familiar ты; adults are often addressed formally by first name and patronymic. Interpreters keep the appropriate register. We provide face-to-face, video, telephone, conference and remote simultaneous interpreting.

Translation

  • Russian documents usually include a patronymic (a middle name formed from the father's name), and surnames change for gender (Ivanov, Ivanova). Transliteration into Latin script has changed over time and differs by country, so the same name can be spelled differently in different documents. Supply the passport so translations match it.
  • Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies. Documents from Russia and other countries that use Russian may also need an apostille or other legalisation; check the receiving authority's requirements. For documents going to authorities in the United States, we arrange the certification those authorities require, including the translator's certificate of accuracy that US immigration authorities expect.
