Bengali interpreting and translation

Bengali, or Bangla, is the national language of Bangladesh and an official language in several Indian states. We provide Bengali interpreters and translators, and we match regional varieties such as Sylheti and Chittagonian when they matter.

Bengali is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is the sole official language of Bangladesh and an official language of West Bengal, Tripura and parts of Assam in India. Standard written Bengali (cholito bhasha) is shared across the border, though there are differences of vocabulary, spelling preference and pronunciation between Bangladeshi and Indian usage.

Spoken Bengali varies considerably by region. Sylheti, spoken in north-eastern Bangladesh, and Chittagonian, spoken in the south-east, are sometimes treated as dialects of Bengali and sometimes as separate languages; many speakers of either understand standard Bengali but are more comfortable in their own variety. A large share of Bangladeshi-heritage communities in the UK have family roots in Sylhet, which makes this distinction especially relevant for UK public services.

Bengali services

SILA Linguists®

Bengali (Bangla) interpreting and translation services by SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® supplies Bengali interpreters and translators to hospitals, courts, councils, schools and businesses across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and further afield. Bangla is the national language of Bangladesh and an official language of West Bengal, Tripura and parts of Assam, so our first question is always where the speaker is from. Bangladeshi and Indian usage differ in vocabulary, forms of address and spelling, and many clients with Sylheti or Chittagonian roots follow detail far better in their home variety.

Bengali interpreters matched to the speaker

Bengali interpreters are widely available, which means face-to-face interpreting at maternity units, GP surgeries, police stations, solicitors' offices and parents' evenings can often be arranged at short notice. Telephone interpreting operates around the clock, every day of the year, and video interpreting is available through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform for housing reviews, social care assessments and remote hearings.

An older client from Sylhet may struggle with a standard Bengali interpreter on medical or legal detail, while a younger client may be equally happy in either. We ask, record the answer and match accordingly. Many women prefer a female interpreter for antenatal and gynaecological appointments, and we note that request on the booking. For community consultations, conferences and training events we provide consecutive and simultaneous interpreters, including remote simultaneous interpreting.

Bengali document translation and certification

Our Bengali translators handle witness statements, police disclosure, school reports, tenancy agreements, medical letters and patient information, translating in both directions. Documents from Bangladesh follow Bangladeshi spelling and terminology, and documents from West Bengal follow Indian conventions. Conjunct consonants in the Bengali script can break in design software, so every leaflet or poster is checked again after layout.

Names on Bangladeshi certificates are often romanised in more than one way. Before we finalise a certified Bengali translation, we confirm the spelling against passports or existing records, then attach a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. For American immigration we provide a translator's certificate of accuracy, and for Canada we can arrange a provincially certified translator.

Bengali transcription, audio information and language analysis

We transcribe Bengali recordings, including police interviews, safeguarding calls and research interviews, and supply time-stamped transcripts with an English translation. For readers with limited literacy, we produce health and council information as recorded Bengali or Sylheti audio and video, with subtitles where useful. When an asylum or immigration case raises questions about a speaker's origin, SILA Linguists® can also arrange language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO).

Sectors we support in Bangla

Our vetted, trained and qualified Bengali linguists can support the NHS, mental health services, criminal and family courts, immigration solicitors, housing associations, local authority social care teams and schools, as well as firms trading with Dhaka and Kolkata in textiles, finance and technology. You deal with one project team throughout, our linguists are vetted and bound by confidentiality agreements, and your data is handled under UK GDPR. Bengali interpreting extends to the United States and Canada, where our linguists can support immigration hearings, refugee claims, hospitals and schools.

Good to know

Working with Bengali

Interpreting

  • Ask whether the client speaks standard Bengali, Sylheti or Chittagonian. An older Sylheti speaker may find a standard Bengali interpreter hard to follow on medical or legal detail, while a younger speaker may be equally comfortable in either.
  • Indian and Bangladeshi Bengali use some different everyday words and forms of address. Matching the interpreter's background to the client's helps with rapport and accuracy, particularly in mental health or safeguarding work.
  • Some clients, particularly women in healthcare settings, may ask for an interpreter of the same gender. We record this preference when it is given.
  • Bengali interpreters are widely available, so face-to-face, video and telephone interpreting are all practical, including at short notice.

Translation

  • Bengali is written left to right in the Bengali script, an abugida with many conjunct consonants. Translations must be produced with Unicode Bengali fonts and checked after layout, since conjuncts can break in design software that does not shape the script correctly.
  • For documents from Bangladesh, we follow Bangladeshi spelling conventions and terminology; for West Bengal, Indian conventions. Names on certificates are often romanised in more than one way, so we confirm the preferred spelling against passports or existing records before finalising a certified translation.
  • Sylheti has its own historical script, Sylheti Nagri, but today Sylheti speakers generally read and write standard Bengali or English. Written materials for Sylheti speakers are therefore normally produced in standard Bengali, with audio or video used where literacy is a concern.
