Nahuatl interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Nahuatl is the most widely spoken Indigenous language in Mexico. SILA Linguists arranges Nahuatl interpreting and translation matched to the speaker's region.
Nāhuatlahtōlli
Nahuatl belongs to the Uto-Aztecan family and was the language of the Aztec (Mexica) state. In the colonial period it was written in the Latin alphabet and used for an extensive body of legal, religious and historical texts, now known as Classical Nahuatl. Several everyday English words, such as chocolate, tomato and avocado, reached English through Spanish from Nahuatl.
Modern Nahuatl is not one uniform language. It has many recognised variants, such as Eastern Huasteca, Central Puebla and Guerrero Nahuatl. Speakers often call their language mexicano or masewaltlahtol. Varieties differ in sounds (some say tl, others t or l), vocabulary and grammar, and speakers from distant regions may struggle to understand each other. Under Mexican law, Nahuatl has the status of a national language alongside Spanish.
A related language, Nawat or Pipil, is spoken by a small number of people in El Salvador.

From police interviews to maternity care and academic research, SILA Linguists® provides Nahuatl interpreters and translators for clients in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Nahuatl, once the language of the Aztec state, is today a group of many varieties, and speakers from distant regions may struggle to understand one another. Many call their language mexicano. We match by state and municipality, whether the Huasteca, the Sierra Norte de Puebla or the Montaña of Guerrero.
Some varieties say tl where others say t or l, and vocabulary and grammar shift from valley to valley. Telling us the speaker's home state and town lets us find an interpreter from the same or a neighbouring area. Nawat, or Pipil, spoken by a small number of people in El Salvador, is a related but separate case.
We deliver Nahuatl interpreting by video, through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform, which helps reach linguists in Mexico and the United States, and by telephone at any time of day. Where interpreters are available locally we attend in person. Relay through Spanish is common: one interpreter works between Nahuatl and Spanish, a second between Spanish and English. Legal proceedings, asylum interviews and hospital consultations are handled consecutively, and we can provide simultaneous interpreting for conferences and cultural events.
Nahuatl spelling is not fully standardised. Church and older materials use Spanish-based spellings with hu, qu and tz, while many modern school texts use w, k and ts. We agree the variant and convention with you and assign a translator from the target region, whether the job is a health leaflet, a community notice or a research instrument.
Mexican civil documents are issued in Spanish, so certified translations of birth certificates, identity papers and court records are made from Spanish, with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. If a Mexican record is headed for a US immigration file, we add the translator's certificate of accuracy that officers there look for. Translations of Classical Nahuatl texts for historians and museums can be discussed with our project team.
We transcribe interviews, oral histories and recorded evidence, providing time stamps and an English translation and noting where speakers switch into Spanish. Subtitles are available for documentary and educational film. For immigration and asylum cases that turn on a person's origin, we can also arrange language analysis (LADO) involving Nahuatl through specialist analysts.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Nahuatl interpreters and translators can support police, courts and solicitors, immigration and asylum services, hospitals and maternity units, schools, universities, museums and cultural organisations. One SILA Linguists® project team coordinates every step under confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. Nahuatl speakers in the United States can have one of our interpreters beside them, or on the line, for an immigration court hearing, a meeting with their attorney or a clinic visit.
